WEEI broke a story earlier today that the Red Sox offered their catcher and "captain" Jason Varitek a one year deal which is definitely not what Varitek and his agent Scott Boras are looking for. We all know the first offer is usually just preamble but it makes you wonder if the Sox really want Varitek back. The word is that he is looking for a four year deal similar to what the Yankees gave their catcher Jorge Pasada and we all know that isn't going to happen.
I guess now they start playing the game and we will be a captive audience. If my memory serves me correctly, Pasada is a decent catcher whereas Varitek is a brilliant catcher, Pasada's bat is still a formidable presence in the Yankee lineup. Varitek hit .220 last season and albeit for one fleeting moment, a game changing homer in the ALCS, his bat has dropped off far to considerably.
With talks of bringing in Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa, who better to groom the young righty who is only 22 years old than Varitek. I should know Theo Epstein is as shrewd as they come and it does not matter what your name is, but what is the big secret? I can't wait to find out because there is a real good ballclub in Boston, but they do have some aging veterans. Shoot I even heard David Ortiz's name being dangled as a carrot out there to get some feelers.
We will be following this story closely because as Red Sox fans we do know what Varitek means to this franchise. This is either going to be happy for everyone,or could turn out real bad and trouble is, this has been a hot topic since the middle of the actual season. Stay tuned.
